Facebook Taking on Social Search (watch out, aardvark / google)

July 28, 2010

Not had time for a real post this week but just logged on to facebook and saw this little pop-up suggesting that I “Ask the Facebook community a question on any topic and get quality answers from people in the know.”

Looks like facebook is going to try to take on social search. Not to be upstaged by Google’s entrance into social search when they bought aardvark last year.

I’ve been a pretty active question-responder on aardvark and love the concept of social search, I’ve found that it works really well for specific things (e.g. a great indian restaurant on polk st?) Definitely am interested in trying out the facebook competition… Anyone out there tried it yet?

After playing with it a bit I totally agree Megan, definitely feels a better version of Yahoo answers I think?

And it looks like someone has also posted a question comparing fb q to aardvark, ha

Definitely Yahoo-answers-esque. I think it will have great traction very shortly…super convenient that it’s at a location where people usually go daily.

One great thing about Aardvark is that they IM you. But down the road, I’m sure FB could push questions to you even when you’re not on their domain, as well.
